Google Earth image helps police enquiry
Police in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire have issued a Google Earth image of a man they are trying to trace in connection with their enquiry into the theft of a caravan.
The white Abbey Adventura caravan was stolen from the driveway of a house on Caudwell Road, Linton between 9.30am and 2pm on June 5 2009. When the theft occurred there was little evidence to help the police enquiry. Despite a forensic examination of the wheel clamps that had been securing the caravan the offender was never traced and the vehicle was never recovered.
In March this year the owner looked on Google Street View and saw that a 4x4 vehicle was parked on his driveway, by his caravan and a man was standing next to it.
The owner does not recognise the man or the vehicle and believes the Google image may have been taken shortly before the caravan was stolen.
PC Adrian Mason, who is investigating the offence said: "It is amazing that we have such a clear image of a man who we think will be able to give us information that would help the police enquiry. It was an amazing co-incidence that the Google Earth car was passing at that time.
"I've made extensive enquiries since the image was discovered but because the registration plate of the 4x4 is blanked out we have been unable to trace the man through his car. That is why we are appealing for the public's help.
Anyone who recognises the man should contact PC Adrian Mason on 0345 123 33 33 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
